Our project in the pretty village of Cumnor, on the outskirts of Oxford, is on the site of a local farm. Comprising of the old house and two barns which are being converted into moder dwellings.
each dwelling had a different brief, but all needed to sit comfortably together in the same landscape.
The Farm House was to be a home for retirement but also visiting Grand children, while one barn was to be home to a young family and the other rented. With a communal drive and a village setting the whole design needed to be very sensitively thought out.
In order to create a cohesive feel to the whole space we have used the same materials in each garden, with large flagstones edged in brick making up the terraces and re-enforced gravel for the driveways.
The Farm House garden features several different outdoor seating areas, cottage style planting and a bespoke made pergola. We have edged the whole plot with wildflower meadow which blends seemlessly with the adjoining paddock.
The family garden includes a covered walkway, kitchen garden and outdoor play for the children. There is also space for chickens & ducks.
The rented Barn garden is simple and private with a long shaded planting bed featuring Acer palmatum. One area is subject to water logging in the winter so here we have added small willow and natural water meadow plants.
